Delta Dash 2015

Every year Delta Park School hosts the Delta Dash Mountain Bike Endurance Challenge. Last year Randburg District scout troops built the start and finish line for the event and this year we did it again...except we went a lot bigger.

Finished model of the gateway to build

This year the project was designed by David Naylor from 1st Randburg and was built by Adiero, 1st Randburg and 1st Robinhills scout troops. It was a great event and the scouts and we all learnt a great deal. The total structure was 4m high, 4m deep and 12m long and was a great event to practise our knots for Kontiki, especially as there were 180 lashings that needed to be done!

Above are some pictures of the building of the structure and the final gateway (taken from a cell phone so not the best quality shot)

The final structure on the day of the race. Standing tall for everyone to see.

Thanks to every one who made it such a great event and congratulations to the scouts for putting up a truly great piece of pioneering work.

BP Camp 20-22 Feb 2015

This year we did something different to honour our founder Lord Baden-Powell. Instead of going out just for the day our entire district decided to camp at Camp Delta.
Our programme for camp was very varied and involved semaphore, knotting, playing games, joining in the campfire and cooking. We did Dutch Oven Cooking for Saturday lunch and it was a great time. We made chicken stew, two loaves of bread and most importantly, pudding. Pudding was a peach cobbler of sorts and tasted amazing.

We all agreed that this camp was a relaxing fun camp and we definitely want to do it again next year.

Ubuntu Camp - Jan 2014

The third Ubuntu camp was held this year at Delta Park Camp Ground. It was very well attended by Scouts from all over the Province, 133 Scouts attended. Adiero joined in and had a Patrol camp there. It was great fun as we did pioneering, woodcraft trails, played games and had a big campfire on Saturday night. We hope to attend more Ubuntu camps throughout the year and congrats to the organisers of the event.

Photos of the whole camp, the troop doing pioneering with other scouts and the campsite where we camped and made out shelters.

BP Camp with 1st Randburg

On BP Weekend (22-24 February) we ran our first BP Camp. This was done as a Scout's Springbok camp. 1st Randburg was invited to add the extra patrol that we needed. This was a great camp as there were many fun and interesting activities. It was great to have a camp where there wasn't a competition and it was about being on camp with your fellow scouts. Some of the activities we did were:
Archery

Minute-to-win-it games - which were small simple activities/games that the scouts did to earn points for their patrol.

Catapults - each patrol build a catapult that they then used to play war games.

Saturday night dinner - cooked dinner on the fire suing only tin foil. Chicken, potatoes and butternut were all very good

15th June 2012: Making rope

So this week we decided to do something interesting...

We spent the first part of the meeting planning our Master Chef competition and then we learnt about rope...
We discussed the different types of rope: sisal and nylon. How they were made: three strands wound together and many strands plaited. We discussed care of ropes and how to check if ropes are damaged or not.

And then we made rope...with toilet paper.
Two different ropes were made. One rope was three strands, plaited together and the other was five plaited strands tied together. The single plait held 2 litres of water and the five plaits held 5 litres and could hold more but we didn't have a big enough jug.

Was a really great meeting and every one learnt a lot.

Kontiki 2012

This year Kontiki was postponed to end of May as Arrow Park was a flooded on the usual March weekend. This year the theme was Vikings.

Our raft design this year was the funeral pyre typical of Viking burials. This was a unique idea, as only Adiero can, and it came off very well as we came 5th in theme.

Campsite this year was a lot smaller than it usually was owing to the change of venue but still we managed to have a good time and participated in all aspects of camping competition.

This year Kontiki was an eventful one and was a refreshing change form the normal. We did really well and came 8th for raft and 11th for campsite with an overall of 8th. This is a fantastic result for us and we are so proud of every one to participated and helped out.

Thanks to the organisers for arranging such a great time.

2 December 2011: Mini Olympics

At the last meeting of the year we decided to have some fun and did a mini olympics night. The patrols completed against each other to see who was the best. The events at this mini olympics were:

Long jump - Using a baloon blow it up and let it go. The one that goes the furthest is the winner.
Discus - Throwing a paper plate the furthest
Javelin - Throwing a straw the furthest
Reverse high jump - Walking underneath a low string and eating prezel off the string
Steeple chase - Tie the whole patrols legs together as a 7-legged race and go through a steeple chase-like course
Swimming - Swim across the floor (Butterfly was particularly funny)
Sailing - Construct a miniature sailing boat from corks, kebab sticks and paper and blow it across the hall.
Ping pong - Using a ping pong and your breath blow the ball over the other patrols side of the table.
This evening was great fun as the patrols were not aware of what each event entailed.

So ended a great year at Adiero and we look forward to seeing everyone next year for another eventful and fun-filled year!!
