Meeting: 5 Feb - Flintstone cars

This week Quintessa planned a pioneering programme that ended with the patrols making Flintstone cars. For those of you that don't remember, Flintstone cars are cars that you power with your feet.

We were donated big rollers many years ago and decided to bring them out to try this project again. Quintessa built a model that the scouts had to copy which made it very easy for them to know the design they were required to build. The design was very solid and each patrol could easily build it from what we had in the hall.

Both cars were very successful and wheeled their way across the floor very well. Everyone had a great time.

Meeting: 22 January - First Aid

First aid is a very important part of scouting but sometimes it can feel a bit boring. So at Adiero we always try and mix things up a bit.

This week we did First Aid with the First Class scouts explaining and demonstrating some first aid to injuries such as Hypothermia, Sprains and Dehydration. After this our Explorer scout demonstrated how to deal with spinal injuries and place someone on a stretcher. This is not a one person job and the whole troop got involved.

After this we did some thing fun - we made fake wounds! If you'd like to know how it's done you can check out this Wikihow link. The scouters all brought old make-up and we had Vaseline, toilet paper and plastic wounds that we got to try out. It was great fun and everyone ended up with some horrific wound on some part of their body.

The hardest part not getting the make-up, Vaseline and fake blood on our scout uniforms when we needed to get changed again.

Rafting Camp - Nov 2015

On our last camp for the year we decided to go on a rafting camp to Arrowe Park and do some fun rafting.

We camped with 1st Peter Place and 1st Benato and had a great time. We spent the first part of Saturday building our small movable rafts. This was a great training exercise for all those who had never build a raft before. We then had a series of bases where we could test our raft mobility.

After bases we had a Jedi fighting base where two rafts faced off and were joined by a plank. Members of each team were given pool noodles and had to knock their opponent off the plank. This was lots of fun and each team would challenge other team members, including the scouters!

Another base was catapult building where scouts were given staves, ropes and water balloons and were tasked at building catapults that could hit scouters 5m away.

Dinner that night was another Dutch Oven Cooking experiment where we made pizza! This was such a success and definitely something to be repeated.

This camp was a great fun, relaxing camp and definitely something we will do again. Thanks to all the scouts who attended and to 1st Peter Place and 1st Benato for camping with us and inviting us to a great weekend.

Kontiki 2015: There be dragons

Kontiki is the annual rafting race where scouts are challenged to build a raft and live on it for 24 hours.
This year's Kontiki was held from 15-17 May and the theme was "There be dragons" and it was all about exploring unknown places. As usual Adiero participated in Kontiki and, as usual, we did phenomenally well. There was approximately 50 teams at Kontiki this year and our overall score put us at 15th with our raft crew coming in 16th. The meal competition for the shore team, that was run by 3 Pathfinders, came in 4th! The meal competition is often run by 16 year-olds in other troops but our Pathfinders beat most of them and did so well.

We're all looking forward to next years theme "Jedi Knights"!

Delta Dash 2015

Every year Delta Park School hosts the Delta Dash Mountain Bike Endurance Challenge. Last year Randburg District scout troops built the start and finish line for the event and this year we did it again...except we went a lot bigger.

Finished model of the gateway to build

This year the project was designed by David Naylor from 1st Randburg and was built by Adiero, 1st Randburg and 1st Robinhills scout troops. It was a great event and the scouts and we all learnt a great deal. The total structure was 4m high, 4m deep and 12m long and was a great event to practise our knots for Kontiki, especially as there were 180 lashings that needed to be done!

Above are some pictures of the building of the structure and the final gateway (taken from a cell phone so not the best quality shot)

The final structure on the day of the race. Standing tall for everyone to see.

Thanks to every one who made it such a great event and congratulations to the scouts for putting up a truly great piece of pioneering work.

BP Camp 20-22 Feb 2015

This year we did something different to honour our founder Lord Baden-Powell. Instead of going out just for the day our entire district decided to camp at Camp Delta.
Our programme for camp was very varied and involved semaphore, knotting, playing games, joining in the campfire and cooking. We did Dutch Oven Cooking for Saturday lunch and it was a great time. We made chicken stew, two loaves of bread and most importantly, pudding. Pudding was a peach cobbler of sorts and tasted amazing.

We all agreed that this camp was a relaxing fun camp and we definitely want to do it again next year.

Ubuntu Camp - Jan 2014

The third Ubuntu camp was held this year at Delta Park Camp Ground. It was very well attended by Scouts from all over the Province, 133 Scouts attended. Adiero joined in and had a Patrol camp there. It was great fun as we did pioneering, woodcraft trails, played games and had a big campfire on Saturday night. We hope to attend more Ubuntu camps throughout the year and congrats to the organisers of the event.
